Is Sintered Bronze Strong?
Oct 12, 2026| 📊 Basic Strength Characteristics of Sintered Bronze
Sintered bronze is a copper-tin alloy prepared through powder metallurgy, and its strength performance differs significantly from that of cast bronze .
• Under standard composition and processing conditions, the tensile strength of sintered bronze typically ranges between 150-300 MPa, which is lower than that of cast bronze of the same composition (cast bronze tensile strength usually falls within the 200-400 MPa range) but higher than many commonly cast non-ferrous metals.
• Porosity is the core factor affecting the strength of sintered bronze: the higher the porosity, the lower the strength. The porosity of conventional sintered bronze typically ranges from 5% to 15%. If the porosity is reduced below 5% through controlled processes, the strength can approach that of forged bronze of the same composition.
⚙️ Key Factors Affecting the Strength of Sintered Bronze
• Composition ratio: When the tin content is within 10%, strength gradually increases with higher tin content. However, when the tin content exceeds 15%, brittleness increases while strength decreases. Adding small amounts of alloying elements such as lead and nickel can refine the grain structure, further enhancing strength.
• Sintering Process: Sintering temperature, holding time, and pressing pressure all affect porosity. Higher pressing pressure can reduce the porosity of the green body, resulting in higher strength of the finished product after sintering; an appropriate sintering temperature ensures full metallurgical bonding of the alloy, while excessively high temperatures can lead to grain growth and reduced strength.
• Post-processing: Through subsequent treatments such as secondary pressing and impregnation, internal pores can be sealed, effectively enhancing the strength of sintered bronze. Some high-density sintered bronzes treated with hot isostatic pressing can achieve strength surpassing that of conventional cast bronze.
🎯 Strength performance in practical applications
Sintered bronze is commonly used to prepare structural parts such as bearings, gears, and bushings. Under low to medium load conditions, its strength fully meets the requirements for use; If it is a high load and high impact working condition, it is usually achieved by adjusting the process to increase density or changing the composition to meet the strength requirements.
